What is cellulite?

We call cellulite the "orange peel" appearance of the skin on the thighs and buttocks, which shows an irregular dimpled surface. It is actually a manifestation of what is going on under the skin, so let's first understand what is going on internally.

This whole process usually starts with the accumulation of fluids, which the lymphatic system has not eliminated naturally.

Sugar polymers are released into the extracellular space. As a consequence, adipocytes (fat cells) hypertrophy, grow in size.

The fat cells continue to grow in number and thickness, and the fibrous septa, or connective tissue, tightens, and the micro-circulation and tissue become congested. Starting a vicious circle of cellulite.

The irregular appearance of the skin is called "orange peel skin" and is due to two factors:

1. Connective tissue contracts. Tight connective tissue pulls the skin downward.
2. Fat cells thicken and grow in number, pushing out the superficial part of the skin.
